Hebrews 7:23-28 – The New Covenant
Key Verses: (MSG)
- 23: “Earlier there were a lot of priests, for they died and had to be replaced.” – The letter of Hebrews continues to teach why, through Christ, the old traditional Jewish ways of repentance were no longer necessary. The practices of their Jewish heritage had been replaced with a new paradigm, a new covenant; “one that really works.” (verse 22)
- 24-25: “But Jesus’ priesthood is permanent. He’s there from now to eternity to save everyone who comes to God through Him, always on the job to speak up for them.” – Christ is our advocate, mediator to God in our behalf.
- 26: “So now we have a high priest who perfectly fits our needs: completely holy, uncompromised by sin…” – The human failings and shortcomings of the priests had been a barrier under the old system.
- 27: “Unlike the other high priests, He doesn’t have to offer sacrifices for His own sins. He’s done it, once and for all offered up Himself as the sacrifice.” – Once and for all times. Jesus, in one magnificent act of love, has blotted out our sin for all time.
- 28: “The law appoints as high priests men who are never able to get the job done right. But this intervening command of God, which came later, appoints the Son, who is absolutely, eternally perfect.” – Through this perfection our salvation is guaranteed.
- Do you desire to return to the “good-ole days?”
Promises of the Gospel:
The Hebrews were wanting to return to the familiar rituals and traditions from which they had been freed by the love of Christ. However, things can never be as they once were. Once we accept that Christ has died for us, that His act of sacrificial love has permanently and for all times erased our sins and has created a pathway to holiness, nothing will remain the same. Our old and sinful ways are gone forever. Christ is always available to intercede in our behalf. In response to this love we become actively involved in building bridges that others can use to grow closer to Him. A pathway to God’s love is open and available to everyone.
