Job 42:1-6, 10-17 – Repentance and Restoration
Key Verses: (NRSV)
- 2: “I know that you can do all things and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.” – Job restates God’s questions and begins the process of repenting for his attitudes of arrogance and self-righteousness.
- 5: “I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you.” - There comes a point in our lives when we suddenly have a personal experience with God that changes everything.
- 6: “Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.” – Job has finally seen the error of his ways and has come to realize that he is unworthy of God’s love and grace.
- 10: “And the Lord restored the fortunes of Job when he had prayed for his friends.” – Looking beyond his self and reaching out, instead, to God and to others, is the first step to reconciliation for Job.
- 12: “The Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning.” – God rewards a life of faith.
- 17: “And Job died, old and full of days.” – Forever blameless and upright before the Lord.

Promises of the Gospel:
We have come to realize by reading about Job’s troubles and hardships that we can expect to experience times in our lives where our faith will be tested. Our response to the difficulties we face is the test. Will these situations cause us to grow in our faith and love of God or will they become a source of separation? Job learned that the majesty of God’s love had never left him but, instead, it was his focus on himself that had created the largest barrier. Once this barrier came down in the form of prayers for his friends he was able to once again feel the loving presence of his Lord. Setting ourselves aside, recognizing that all situations we find ourselves immersed in will pass, and that God faithfulness never waivers, allows us to grow and mature. With God as our foundation we can persevere through all things. In response to our faithfulness we are immeasurably blessed in order that we can be the blessings in the world around us that He is calling us to be.
