The day started out so peacefully, but an unexpected storm descended upon our little beach town. I was caught off guard during an outing at the nearby pier…

Standing at the edge of the old wooden the pier, I felt the force of the waves crashing against the pilings. Tumultuous, fierce and unrelenting, the storm came crashing down around me. The barrage persisted, matched only by the force of the conflict within my soul.

“Peace!” I cried out to the blackened skies, but peace would not come.

I braced myself against the railing as another series of waves assaulted the wharf. I don’t know how long I was there or how long the storm raged on, but finally, drenched and battered, I managed to journey toward the beach. Past the walkways and businesses, I made my way into the shelter of a nearby coffee shop. I found solace in hot coffee and silence from the violent voice of the storm.

But the tempest within still pounded the pilings of my heart.

How long had this storm been brewing in my heart? How long had it raged within my being, and when would it subside?

“Peace!” I silently cried out. “Lord, bring me peace!”

Then, like a healing balm, the One who calmed the seas began a work in my heart. It was not instantaneous, but there was an awareness that something was different. I knew that I was going to be alright. I was no longer alone as I faced the squall within my soul. And I knew that this storm, too, would pass.
