Family
I take comfort in the knowledge that should we focus our love on each other, and place our own needs aside, we find a certain kind of 'peace', which surrounds us.
As a Mum, I find it very, very tempting to get caught in the [net] of my adult children's woes. All are married, two daughters have children.
In fact, I'm often on the phone to my sister, who is in the same position as myself. She is the Mum of five children. One married, four at home.
She tells me her worries, and I, in turn tell her mine!
On the odd occasion, we become Counsellors towards each other, placating, comforting, sometimes being blunt, to get the message home!
And isn't that what we are here to do? Isn't that what life is all about? To support?
When we find we have 'fallen out' of the arms of a tender, loving energy,[Jesus] taking on worries that really, are not ours to own, and we feel out of control, we need to be reminded that we are so loved, so valued, so precious, it really is a 'sin' to carry these burdens!
We tend to forget, that our children look upon us as ROCKS!
The children tend to forget that rocks crumble due to inclement weather!
So it's a hard task at times to always be the Mum & Dad, the shoulders to cry on,the ROCKS!
Fortunately, as a believer, I can pray and ask for guidance.
I also have a husband who is 'down to earth', Bless him!
He keeps me stable when it comes to emotion. But then, he is NOT me, and I am NOT him.
Yet,by hook or by crook, we are a compliment to each other!
I suppose what I am trying to say is that parenting is not easy! It's a life-long commitment, no books to guide us, just gut instinct.
As a Mum, you cannot afford to be a best friend to your children, you always need to keep a certain distance, even though your heart is in the right place.
Having said that, I could not envisage my life without our three beautiful children. They are the babies I prayed for, the ones whom I would go into battle for, to protect them, and honour them with respect. They are the reason we moved from England to Australia, so they have been given the chance of a sunny life!
And they are our pride and joy.
Sometimes, [like this time] I feel sapped of energy, a little deflated and this is the time I seek Jesus, as my counsellor!

Veronica, I know exactly what you're saying. I have been pondering this sort of thing over the last couple of weeks, and wondering when we, as parents, are able to reach that place where we don't feel the burdens of our children. I guess, instead, we have to reach the place where we are that strength and wisdom for them, without allowing their decisions and burdens to weigh us down.
From a critiquing point of view, as you've asked for it, I think the use of the parentheses in the way you have is a little distracting. That sort of bracket [] gives the impression that the author has replaced words. It did throw me a little. If you need to use this sort of thing, it's best to opt for commas or ().
The other thing was the first sentence. It made the reader feel as though they had jumped into the article halfway through. Although you don't want to drag out the start, it possibly needed a little more before that sentence to hook the reader and set a clearer scene.
But a good message, and one that every loving parent needs to be reminded of as we fulfill this lifelong commitment.
With love, Deb Porter (Editor, FaithWriters' Magazine and Challenge Coordinator.)
