And the Lord
appeared
to him by the oaks
of Mamre,
as he sat at the door
of his tent
in the heat
of the day.

"Lord, why don't You speak
DIRECTLY to us, ANYMORE?"

"Anymore than what, child?"

"YOU know!"

[SMILE.]
"Know what,
My precious?"

"Like at that tent - with
ABRAHAM! You just strolled
up, and started YAPPIN' with him!
How come You don't DO that,
anymore?"

[LAUGH!]

"WELL?
How COME?"

"But, I do,
child."

"Uh UH!
EVERYBODY says SO!"

"Who's everybody, child."

"Eh......Ya know:
EVERYBODY!"

[NOD.]
"Ah!
And, do you believe them?"

"Well...SURE, LORD!
Heck, just the other DAY...!"

[GENTLE VOICE.]
"But you don't believe
ME, child?"

"Well.......
(Munch on some popcorn.)
(Grimmace.)
(Put it back in the microwave.)
Eh..............sorta.
(Take bowl out. Eat one
kernel. Toss bowl into garbage.)
.....Not really, Lord."

"Child!"

"Huh?"

"What are you DOING?"

"Well, Lord; I can't EAT this
stuff! Just LOOK at it!"

[CHUCKLE.]
"We're not speaking of
popcorn, child!"

"Good; cuz, I'm a lousy
cook. Anyhow.....I forgot
what we were talkin' about."

[PATIENT SILENCE.]

(Squint.)
(Take Kosher dill jar out
of fridge.)
(Munch on a sour pickle.)
"Oh, yeah.
(Take out another pickle.)
Hey, LORD?
How the other DAY?
What were Ya tryin' to tell me,
THEN?"

[LOOK ON LOVINGLY.]
"When,
My child."

"Ya KNOW: when that BIRD
pooped on me!
REMEMBER?
I was walkin' into the grocery
STORE?
And, all of a sudden:

SPLAT!!

RIGHT on my SHOULDER!
Was that YOU?"

[BURST OUT LAUGHING!]

"HEY!
I THOUGHT that was YOU!
Yeah! I figured,

Huh? I wonder what the
Lord's tryin' to tell me,
NOW?

I even remember mumbling,
Hey! Thanks a LOT!
OTHER folks get PENNIES
from HEAVEN!
And......LOOK what I GET!"

[CHUCKLE.]

(Laugh!)
"Actually, I thought it
was real funny, Lord."

"Why, My precious?"

"Because, I think You were
just telling me...."

"Yes?"

"That You DID have a
sense of HUMOR!"

[SMILE.]

And the Lord
went His way,
when He had finished
speaking
to Abraham,
and Abraham
returned
to
his place.
[Genesis 18:33]
