The comments of Peter as recorded in the Gospels are usually given as proof that hoof-In-mouth disease has Biblical origins. I have to think that many a theologian has wondered how this "loose cannon" made it into the Gospels, much less the inner sanctum of apostles. A cartoonist rendering might accurately show a snub nose .38-barrel stickin out between the teeth, always with a whiff of smoke coming out, cause its just been shot off!

But there he was, not only in the Gospels, among the apostles, but among those closest to his Lord. This guy never had a guarded comment- he always spoke his heart. Sometimes it got him in trouble; sometimes it got him rebuked, one time it almost got him sunk! Don't we just identify with him about that coat, and that walking on water was one cool stunt. "Here, Lord, let ME try that!"

Peter was such an inspiration to most people because we know that if God would put up with and turn a clown like that around, then surely there was hope for us all! Peter had his chance to identify with his Lord when the chips were down- and he turned tail. Human strength has its limits but Godly power knows no limits in a human life that is His.

For pure inspiration and hope, nothing can beat a comparison between the Barney Fife of the apostles and the Bible expositor of his own epistles. It's a clear picture of a work of grace.
