It had been a ten-hour flight and I was extremely tired. To top it off, the time difference in the country was FIVE HOURS! As I thought about relaxing with a long awaited hot shower, I suddenly remembered that I had left all my toiletries behind! So now, as well as my hostess going through the trouble of having to prepare for my arrival, I also had to ask her to lend me some toothpaste!

As I tried to think of ways to approach her without seeming so brazen, I was bowled over by the guest room that was waiting for me.

The room was equipped with everything that a guest needed and much more. There were so many different kinds of toiletries: creams, perfumes, etc. There was even a dressing gown and a nightdress that was washed, ironed, and hung in the wardrobe for me. She had bought it in my favourite colour and it was the right size—just right for me.

How can you ever forget somebody like that? Somebody who goes out of her way to welcome you and make you feel really comfortable? It’s impossible to not have a great first impression of that person! I may not have known her for long, but because of her genuine efforts to make me feel truly welcome in her home, she was automatically added to my circle of true friends!

This is one of the very basic characteristics of a virtuous woman: to look at things as though she was standing in another person’s shoes. Women like this are never forgotten. They do things that they don’t have to, they go out of their way for you, and they always put themselves in your shoes.

If only we could find this quality in many other women, there would be fewer problems between them. There would be no reason to gossip, because one would always think of how she’d feel if someone else were gossiping about her. There wouldn’t be any ill treatment, hostility, or even war.

A woman who can put herself in another woman’s shoes is someone who cares, loves, respects, and is totally selfless. Many women say that they do this, but when it comes down to it, they are too busy looking after their own family, house, and career, to start thinking about another person’s needs.

I guess it’s because of the high price and time consuming energy that’s needed to show somebody you care. You might even have to spend a few extra pounds! Then there’s the possibility of getting an unappreciative reaction… who knows! But then again, do we really need that praise or recognition? What difference will it make?

The fact is that if you can put yourself in another person’s shoes, you are like a rare jewel and the first impression you leave touches us in a profound way.

You become the friend that nobody wants to lose, the daughter that everybody is proud of, the mother that we all look up to, the wife that a husband cannot live without, and the servant that God is looking for.
