Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday March 26, 2008

Our Lady of The Sign, Jennifer Utz put a real winner up this week. People are craning their neck to read it as they drive by. A sheriff nearly ran his car into the airport while trying to write down the saying as he drove by.

"If you chase two rabbits, they will both get away."

Every dog knows the truth of this. Our Mollie stormed through the door way to the backyard early one morning and in a flash she was back at the door, laying a rabbit at the feet of the Great Blonde! I tried to get her to clean and fix the rabbit for Mollie, but of course this did not and will not happen!! Mollie was so proud of herself, almost like Hillary or Barry would be should they capture the nomination.

As you probably know the Lord has blessed us with three dogs, Max the Husky and Bull Terrier mix, Mollie, a mix of Spitz and Tasmanian Devil and Tucker, pure breed Miniature Long Haired Dappled Dachshund, weighing in at 9lbs. When Tucker locks on to a mole, he looks like a Ditch Witch going across the yard in hot pursuit. You would be surprised at how many moles, some rather large, that he catches. Max, born in a junk yard and rescued from certain death by a worker at the yard, Joe Sollars, and nurtured to life by the angelic workers at Heritage Animal Hospital, keeps his focus on the business at hand which is taking care of said business and speedily returning to the back door to whine to come back in. He will on occasion join the other two pirates trying to catch a squirrel that comes down a tree in the back yard, just enough to taunt the dogs, but just far enough up the tree so that on their highest jump they cannot reach him. I suppose it's a male, but again it could be female, for taunting is something the females in our family do quite well. And often.

Last week a coyote sauntered up the fence separating the yard from a field now under development, Mollie and Tucker came roaring to the house, but Max, totally out of character, went and sat down by the fence, the coyote did the same and for all the world it appeared Max, and the coyote were discussing the stock market or maybe the primary. I managed to share this grand scene with the Great Blonde and ended up in the dog house, (again) because I probably had NOT seen a coyote, but most likely the neighbor's boxer. I huffily asserted that I do know the difference between a boxer and a coyote and this set the Mrs. District Attorney strain in said blonde loose and I am still being interrogated as to the distance from the house, was the sun fully up, and were there any weeds that could have partially blocked my vision and how long, Mr. Lilly has it been since you had your eyeglass prescription checked? These and many more questions were asked with that smirky, all knowing look that wives are taught by their mother from earliest childhood. I compounded the cross examination further by assuring my favorite blonde that I had in fact asked our neighbor if Laila, so named for Ali's boxing daughter, had been outside on the morning in question. I was told that Laila never goes out while it still dark or pre-dawn. Well, you married men know where this went. And you can see why I do not wear a clergy collar, but a medicated flea collar.

So, now as this deeply spiritual devotion snakes its way to a close, I want to bond with people who are interested in serving the Lord to the max, (Not the dog) and making the time count, for sooner than we think Jesus may appear and if we are standing before Him empty handed, we just may be asked, in His mellifluous voice, "Didn't you learn anything from the Bible and your dogs; 'If you chase two rabbits, they both will get away.'"

Paul said it well in Philippians 3:13 "Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,"
