Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday March 25, 2008
I am not commenting on the current political climate in our fair country!! Did I hear a "Hallelujah?"
I am commenting on a sign in a diner that brought back memories of my courtship of Joyce, now known as the Great Blonde. I first met her 47 years ago when she worked after school at Roses Diner in Elkton, MD. She waited on me and I ordered coffee, sliced tomatoes and French Fries and with the order an offer of marriage was proffered. The blonde child rushed to the kitchen, informed her mother that she was not going to wait on the smart Alec (Alec was not the word) sitting in the West Sector of the tiny diner. Her mother, whom I had known for ages, came to where I was sitting and in her best Bounty picker upper voice said, "Okay, I understand you want to get married?" I responded, "Well, Jean, I did make the offer, but it was to a nice young girl, not to an old grouch." You can see the good footing with which I launched my long career with my future mother in law. Well, in spite of a fierce 3 year and 9 month campaign, I prevailed and have been ruining Joyce's life for near 44 years. Over the course of these years, Jean did come to the realization of Joyce's deep love for me and my overall greatness.
The little sign that got all of this going stated the event succinctly:
"Customer's, who find our waitresses rude, ought to see the manager."
In many ways I miss the "rude" waitresses and even ruder managers of the era long since past. They have been replaced for the most part by "servers" who seldom look at you, and when they do it is with a blank stare, void of any sort of acknowledgement. I talked to a manager at a local Scottish eatery and the manager assured me, "Thank you for bringing this to my attention, I will get right on it, Ma'am." Actually she called me, "Mayuum." You had to be there. Many have said that Larry Lilly doesn't look human, let alone feminine, so I am putting my money on the line that the manager has no idea that she even had a conversation with anyone that day.
The "server" who had made the comment that I was jokingly talking with the manager about was a nice girl trying to make living, which is not in the cards for workers in such establishments and I was just teasing her due our oral exchange as I placed my order:
"I would like a small black coffee and an order of French Fries." The wunderkind shoot back; "Would you like fries with your order?"
Please, I am not complaining, just passing along an observation. I knew a reasonably successful businessman who regularly hired men and women whom he discovered working at such fast food places when they stood above the crowd by having paid attention during their training. His idea was that if they took this menial job serious enough to pay attention and implement proper training they had some hope and he was more than willing to give them a "leg up" the occupational ladder.
I do not have the means to hire promising men and women a better job, but I always say a prayer for every "server" to do what they do, well, and be promoted by the Lord to a better opportunity. I recall one time buying a life insurance policy from the Agent of the Month I had met and encouraged while he was working as a server who saw the job as an opportunity to learn people skills!
