Ah, Assyria,
the rod of My anger,
the staff of My fury!
Against a godless nation
I send him,
and against the people
of My wrath
I command him,
to take spoil
and seize plunder.

with ME, Lord?"

"THIS Part, Lord!"

"Yeah, Lord:

When the Lord has
finished all His work
on Mount Zion
and on Jerusalem
He will punish
the arrogant boasting
of the king of Assyria
and his haughty pride.
[Isaiah 10:12]"

"Yes, My child.
What of it."

"Well......isn't there a whole
lotta PUNISHING goin
on here, Lord?"

[PATIENT NOD.]

"Yeah! But, what's
this all got to do with ME?
I DIDN'T do NOTHIN!"

[LOVING SHAKE OF A FROWN.]
"This is your history,
My beloved."

"It ain't MY history, Lord!"

"Yes. It is."

"Uh UH!"

[PATIENT SIGH.]
"Who are you, My child?"

"Eh......A plump Yiddisha lady, on her
day off....... who's sittin
around in an old house dress
and ole' maroon, pilled sweater,
eatin from a plate of potato salad
and Polish DILL, at her computer, in
San Antonio, TEXAS?"

[CHUCKLE.]
"Who else, My precious?"

"Eh.....a plump, New Believer lady,
who's waitin for the garbage
guys to pick up her
dirty litter bags, but is
worried that they've
got President's Day off.......
and, who's still waitin for
the lawn guy to come
over and give her an
ESTIMATE on her
teeny tiny LAWN, Lord?"

[SMILE. VERY PATIENT NOD.]

"What ELSE, Lord?
I think that's about IT,
ain't it?"

"No, My precious."

"WELL? What ELSE?"

"No, child.

Much more."

"Oy. Well.....let's see:

An ex-JEWISH PRINCESS?
A present day-SCHLAMEGEL?
A future-soul-waiting-to-be-judged-
before-her-very merciful, and
in a good mood-LORD?"

[LAUGH!]
"Look, child!
Read My Word."

"What: in this part of
ISAIAH, Lord? But.....
I don't SEE NOTHIN!"

"LOOK!"

"Well......all I see here, is
a whole lotta PUNISHING,
goin on, Lord!
Where IS present-day
Assyria, anyway?"

[PATIENT SILENCE.]

"Eh....I guess, it's over there,
somewhere, huh? IRAN, or
TURKEY, or SOMETHIN?"

"Where are YOU,
My beloved?"

(lots a squinting.)
(sip of coca cola.)
(listen again for lawn guy's
truck, and the garbage men.)
(another sip of cola.)
"How come You never
talk about San Antonio,
in Here, Lord? You know,
that's not FAIR!"

"Oy, Mein kinderlah!"

"WHAT? WHERE?
'Ya mean, THIS Part, Lord:

In that day
the remnant of Israel
and the survivors of the
House of Jacob will no
more lean upon Him
that smote them,
but will lean upon the Lord,
the Holy One of Israel,
in truth.
[Isaiah 10:20]?"

[NOD.]

"I'm one a Your REMNANT,
Lord?"

[MORE NODDING.]

"That's exactly what I am,
Lord: a REMNANT!
A RAGGEDY remnant!
A TATTERED, SCRUFFY
remnant!"

"Yes, My beloved.
[PAUSE.]
But, you're Mine."

There shall come forth
a shoot from the stump
of Jesse,
and a branch shall grow
out of his roots.
And the Spirit of the Lord
shall rest upon Him,
the spirit of wisdom
and understanding,
the spirit of counsel
and might.....
