They didn't even know his last name. This bearded homeless man had been sitting daily on the same street corner in this busy metropolis for ten long years according to an unobtrusive item in the city newspaper. Some folks called him "Santa;" some called him "Jerry." They gave him a dollar or two once in awhile. One person reportedly gave him $5 one time. He went next door to the 7-Eleven, bought a Slurpee and returned the change to the donor. He sat with his four shopping carts full of his belongings, day after day for a decade. Some folks were kind to him, took him to a near-by restaurant for a meal now and then, bought him a jacket and gloves when the cold wind blew. But then he went missing, shopping carts overturned and empty, and no Jerry. The authorities couldn't make much of an effort to find out what happened to him because, as they said, "It's hard when you don't even know someone's last name." Indeed it is. He never harmed a soul. Someone left two roses where he sat, and a notebook. Seventy people wrote in it. But Jerry had come and gone.

We call ourselves Christians, read our Bibles, say our prayers and assemble in His name. We attempt to live good moral lives, but brothers and sisters, we may be failing the final exam: "Inasmuch as you have done it to the least of these..." Matthew 25:34-46
