Everyone wants to succeed at whatever they put their hand to, right? Success is what drives us to do our best. You can never be successful at anything unless you handle it wholeheartedly, whether it’s in your marriage, your friendships or a task at hand. The same is true for our walk with God.

Why does it seem so difficult to live a Christian life? Why are there so many people that turn away from serving God? The answer lies simply in what has our attention. One thing I’ve learned about my own personal walk with Jesus is that the moment I think I can hold the hand of God in one hand and the hand of the world in the other, I’m going to fail. You can never ever mix the two together. They separate like oil and water, they just don’t go together. Serving God requires surrendering our lives, which includes dieing to the hunger for worldly pleasures. Remember, what you feed lives and what you starve will die.

When we try to balance both the world and God, we are serving two masters. (Matthew 6:24) We have a bit of God in our lives and a bit of the world. In the end, the world will always win. The world will gladly share you with God as long as it has the biggest part of you. But if you truly want to live a successful Christian life, you have to have all of God and none of the world in your hand. You must become all of God’s. He will not share you with the world.
I remember when I gave my heart to God at the age of 14, God truly did a washing in my heart. I remember feeling conviction from my sin for the first time in my life. I was at the alter crying out to Jesus for forgiveness of my sins and I felt a cleansing take place in my heart. I literally felt like a new person. When I came home from the Christian camp I was at, I no longer listened or watched the things I used to watch before I was saved. I now loved Jesus; and the Holy Spirit, living inside me, led me down a narrow path of holiness.

Matthew 7:13-14 talks about two pathways. In life we are walking on one of two paths: Wide Path which leads to destruction or a Narrow Path which leads to life. At the beginning of each path is a gate. The first gate is a wide gate and there are many that choose this gate. It has plenty of room and appears to be more inviting. This is the path I was on before my encounter with Jesus. The path is so wide and makes room for sin along the way. On this path anything is permissible and acceptable. People are walking down this path living for themselves and doing whatever they see fit. What you will find on this path is a life of sin.

The Bible also talks about another gate and path. This gate is much more narrow than the previous gate and very few find it. Everyone wants eternal life and a fulfilled life, and that’s what this gate leads to. Unfortunately, only a few people will find this gate and walk through it. It is so narrow, and the path so slim, not many people choose to walk through. You see, Jesus is the gate keeper of this gate. If we choose to take Jesus’ gate, he will enter our lives and cleanse us. Then he invites us to walk down the path which in the end leads to life. Now this narrow path requires living a life of purity and holiness. A life that is wholly devoted to God. Choose which path you will walk down.
