Devotionals
On our front porch, there is a light fixture that sports a robin’s nest complete with four tiny blue eggs. Soon, the chirping of baby birds will be heard. Once the eggs hatch, Momma Robin will conduct a non-stop search of delicious meals for her young. (I don’t know what they see in worms- they really don’t taste all that great.) It won’t be long until the plump little birdies hop out of the nest and begin chasing dinner on their own.
One of the numerous joys of parenting is watching your child grow into an adult. Babies learn to hold their head up, crawl and say “ma ma” and “da da”. Toddlers begin to drink from a cup, walk and touch everything they can reach. Then, there are many firsts along the way- the first day of kindergarten, making a friend and cleaning up their room without being asked. (I’ve been told this actually happens.) Without question, a parents’ greatest delight is their children.
Spiritually, we are the children of God. This is an honor and privilege that we do not deserve. Yet, God wants to be called “Father” by us. As our Heavenly Father, He desires that we grow from babes in the faith to spiritual adults. The Lord Almighty takes pride in seeing us attain maturity in our walk with Him. 2 Peter 3:18 (NIV) states, “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” Spiritual growth comes through desiring God’s will and obedience to His Word.
God is eager to feed us, but is frequently limited by our actions and attitudes. Many a time we do not seek to be fed from His hand. Often we do not hunger or thirst for His righteousness. The three main staples of our spiritual diet: prayer, Bible reading and fellowship with believers; are regularly replaced with junk food. God wants to quench our appetite and He knows what we need in order to grow strong and healthy.
Can you picture the baby robins crying out to be fed and the mother faithfully answering their pleas? I believe this illustrates how we should seek after God- by humbly and diligently pursuing the Bread of Life. God will not miss an opportunity to nurture His children. In Luke 6:21 (NIV) we read, “Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied.” Indeed, only God can satisfy and abundantly so.
It’s dinner time. “Pass the worms, please!”
