Grief

My heart is broken
within me.
[Jeremiah 23:9]

"Yes, child."

"Are You here, tonight?
I thought, maybe,
You were someplace else."

"Where, child?"

"Eh.......like, Mt. Everest,
for example."

[NOD.]
"I am there, too."

"What's it LIKE?"

"Cold.
Very cold."

(laugh!)
"Why do people
go UP there, Lord?
I mean, why don't
they just stick their
head in the freezer:
wouldn't it be CHEAPER?"

[PATIENT NOD.]
"Adventure, child.
And, perhaps, glory."

"What IS glory, Lord?
Didn't Moses stand up
on a mountain, so he
could see YOURS?"

[NOD.]

"Where ELSE can
we see Your Glory,
Lord?"

"In your heart, child."

"Uh uh, Lord.
My heart doesn't have
any glory in it. None
at all."

"Look again, child."

"Sometimes, it feels
like it's been on top 'a
Mt. Everest, Lord.
All the air, and
warm stuff is
gone."

"No, child.
Read My Word."

"I don't think anybody
ever saw Mt. Everest,
in Your days, Lord.
(pause)
Yeah. Okay.
Here's somethin':

......search after Him
with all your heart
and with all your soul.
[Deuteronomy 4:29]

(long silence)
So, if I love You,
Lord, then......"

[GENTLE VOICE]
"Yes, child?"

"Then, not all
of my heart's got
frostbite?"

"None of it, child."

(silence)
"Why is that, Lord."

"Because, child....
it's in My Hand."

Thus says the Lord,
Who gives the sun....light by day
and the fixed order of the moon
and the stars for light by night,
Who stirs up the sea
so that its waves roar -
the Lord of hosts
is His name.
