and frankincense,
with all the fragrant powders
of the merchant?

"What is it, Mein kinderlah."

"Uh, uh!
You're not gonna' SOFTEN
me up, THIS time, LORD!"

[LAUGH!]

"Nu?
SO?
What am I gonna' do with this STUFF?"

"Keep it, child."

"Hey, are You tryin' to be FUNNY?"

[CHUCKLE.]

"Seriously, Lord.......this bag
of potpourri was like, HALF
off, or somethin', at Walmart."

[SOLEMN NOD.]

"It was filled with all this
pretty smelling potpourri,
from Christmas."

"Yes, My precious."

"So, I thought:
Oh, good!
I can put it in my bathroom!"

[PATIENT NOD.]

"HEY, LORD!
Are You LISTENING?"

"Child, I know every word
that you've ever said."

"Oy.
That's pretty scary!"

[SMILE.]

(thoughtful silence)
"So, anyhow.....there I was
in the store. I had just
picked up some kitty litter.
That half-off aisle was
across from it,
next to the garden hoses."

[VERY PATIENT NOD.]

"Are You in Walmart, too,
Lord?"

"I am everywhere, child."

"YOU go to WALMART,
Lord?"

"Yes, Mein kinderlah."

"Hey, don't You think it
was better, before they
made it so big? 'Used to
be, the cat food was right
down the aisle from the
paper towels. Now it's....."

"Read My Word, child."

"WHY, Lord?
(silence)
Is there somethin' about
freshening up potpourri,
in THERE?"

[PATIENT SILENCE]

(pages shuffle)
"I looked up in the
Concordia, Lord.
It ain't in There.
Now, what?"

"Look again."

"Couldn't 'Ya at least
gimme' a CLUE:
is it in the Old Part
or the New Part?"

"Both."

"Well, THAT's weird."
Are You SURE?
Where is it, in the
Garden of EDEN?"

"There, too."

"Oh.
'Uh, oh.
Are You talkin' in RIDDLES,
again, Lord? You know I'm
not good at that stuff.
I STILL haven't figured out
what Jesus meant about that
Parable of the Talents!
I mean, that ONE guy was given ONE
talent, but didn't throw it
out, and still got punished for it,
ANYWAY! It just doesn't make
any SENSE to me; 'kinda
like puttin' the kitty litter
on the other side of the store
from the paper towels!"

"Yes. I know,
My precious."

(thoughtful silence)
(sip of rootbeer)
"HEY!
I think I GOT it, Lord!
Is this about freshening up
my LIFE, with Your WORD....
sort'a like putting that oil
stuff on my POTPOURRI?"

"No, My beloved."

"Is this another RIDDLE, Lord?"

"No, My beloved.
My Word, child.
[SILENCE]
