If there is one thing that will keep someone from having the confidence to step forward and help others by contributing to the community, it is a low self-esteem. There have been many people who over the years have been filled with a sense of mission, who would have dearly wished to help those less fortunate than themselves, or who had some problem, yet when the time came to act, licked the spirit.

They held back because deep within them they felt that they were inadequate, that their ideas were nonsense, and their dreams worthless. They held back because they were trapped in the awful vice of fear. But take heart for it doesn’t have to be like this because there are many ways you can overcome a low self-esteem, and set you confidently on the road to the achievements that you rightly wish for and deserve. Here are some of them:

You are Unique: You have probably heard this a hundred times, but it is worth repeating here because it is true. You are unique. There is nobody else on this planet quite like you. Never has been. Never will be. Now, that wonderful piece of information singles you out as somebody very special, so carry that thought with you as you face the world each day.

Realise your Talents: Nobody has quite your range talents or gifts, or your experience or knowledge. So really you have many important qualities to offer to those around you. Be prepared to freely give of your talents, and in time you will realise that people will genuinely need you.

Act as though You are Confident: Walk tall and with a purposeful step. Take the front seat on the bus, don’t hide away at the back. Start the conversation. Look people squarely in the eye. Do these things constantly and belief and confidence will become second nature to you.

Increase Your Knowledge: If you feel that you are lacking, whether in an academic or practical sense, then take immediate steps to correct the situation. Take a postal course, attend lectures, join a church group, enrol for further education, in fact do anything that will stretch and extend your capabilities.

Rejection: This can be very traumatic especially if it is of an emotional nature. But you must understand that you are too valuable to be beaten, and that the pain inflicted by others can be minimised by concentrating on your journey to fulfilment. Always remember that nothing external has any real, lasting power over you unless you allow it to.

Standing in Awe of Others: No matter how exalted the position of those you consider to be better than you, remember that they also feel vulnerable and frightened at times. They too have their own needs and wishes as much as the next person, so always remember that you are equal to the best.

Believe in Yourself: Cast all thoughts of inferiority, guilt, and self-doubt from your mind. There is no place for them there. Think only positive and empowering thoughts, and tell yourself constantly that you have the intelligence and the ability to succeed in your mission.

Serving Others: There can be no greater help to building your self-esteem than having the will and the courage to contribute to others. Not merely in a material sense, but offering those in need the benefit of your knowledge and expertise. By looking outwards instead if inwards, your confidence and self-esteem will soar dramatically.


A low self-esteem limits everything you do. However, it can be changed, but don’t expect a miracle overnight. Be patient. Above all you must respect yourself, so that others will respect you. Replace low self-esteem with determination and a positive outlook on life, and you will in time achieve your mission and claim the satisfying rewards of a life well lived.
