There can be few nicer things than being able to relax in comfortable conditions somewhere, and reflect quietly on how good life really is by. Imagine that you are sitting by the sea with a cold drink in your hand, and watching the sea rolling lazily in.

It is a beautiful summer’s day, you are feeling on top of the world, and best of all you don’t have to go to work for a couple of weeks. You don’t even have to cook the dinner tonight, and altogether things just couldn’t be better. This is the ideal setting for reflecting on what you have done in the past, the people you have known, the sights you have seen, and the wonderful places you have visited.

We have all had joyful experiences, and of course, some that we would rather forget. It is only natural that we are going to get a few nasty memories trying to edge their way in, but we human beings have a happy knack of being able to push the unwanted thoughts out of our heads, and concentrating on the better ones.

For example, ask an old soldier about his time in the army, and the chances are he will tell you all about the great friends he made, and the laughs and escapades they had together. Yet it is also likely that he will not, or maybe doesn’t want to, talk about the harsh discipline that a life in the services entails, or the hardships and dangers he has encountered. He will only remember the happy events, because the memories of the bad times, the arguments, and the grudges he once held have long since disappeared.

So, at the end of a trying day when we can finally sit back and relax, it is a golden opportunity to reflect on our faith, to give thanks for the gift of life, the beauty of the natural world that is all around us, and how lucky we are to be here and share our days with such good and loyal friends.

And when we reflect on those souls unfortunate enough to live in desperately poor countries, usually under corrupt and brutal rulers, and at the mercy of civil wars, we can count ourselves truly blessed, that, despite the problems that pop up to bug us from time to time, we live in a land of peace and opportunity.

Pinned up on a wall in our home we have a little poster that simply proclaims – Each New Day is a Miracle in Progress. We are indeed the lucky ones for whenever we wish we can call to mind some beautiful memories, and also have a chance to play our part in that miracle to ensure a happy future.
