Image in the Mirror

The sharp barking sound grabbed my attention. To our surprise, a wolf appeared in the rear view mirror. This would be a day our whole family would always remember.


My week began like any other. Go to the post office and retrieve the mail. But today was a little different. We had put together a care package for our son at Long Island University. He was in his last year, and in June would be receiving his M.F.A.


This was a much awaited food package from the home front, filled with all the things we wanted him to eat. This was a wholesome break from his fast food menu.


Every now and again my son runs his funds right into the ground, and in a last hail-Mary attempt he calls home. So we typically pack a small amount of money in with the much needed food stuffs and send it out two day mail.


This particular day marked the start of my big landscape project in the next town over. The homeowner wanted the works: a complete foundation planting as well as a full perennial garden in the front of his house.


This was a profitable venture for me and one in which I took my time in my measurements so as not to order too many or too few products for the job.


I stopped work at 3:30 P.M. and went over to my daughter’s school to pick her up. Then I headed over to my wife’s work and picked her up at 4 P.M...


I decided to go the long and scenic route home. This would take us along the old woods road. September was a nice time to go for a nature walk or in this case a drive. There was a crisp leafy smell in the air. As we neared the wood line, the fragrance from the pines wafted in the windows.


The fresh smells of the late afternoon beckoned. Suddenly a sharp barking sound startled us. Had we hit an animal? No, but in the rear view mirror I saw him. A large grey wolf appeared. He was larger than life and seemed to fill the entire mirror with his image. I instinctively hit the brakes. First it was as a precaution, and secondly because I wanted to get a rare look at this creature. His piercing green eyes took my breath away. He was staring right at me.


At that same time, we noticed a thundering herd of deer coming out of the nearby woods. We came within inches and seconds of hitting all fifteen of them. Now my heart managed to make it all the way up to my throat, as I swallowed real hard.


This took my attention away from the wolf for a few fleeting moments, but he was gone anyway. He had completely vanished. Did he know that the deer were coming? Had he purposely caused that diversion? Or was it just a fluke that he showed up at the very moment we needed him to?


Whatever the case may be, we will always be in his debt. I still marvel today as I recall that strange encounter. Why did this animal act as a warning device for my family? Maybe others around town had seen this wolf before, but this was my first sighting, and he has not been seen since by any member of my family.
