A Lie in the Hand

Oct 11, 2007
By Rick L King

Recently a friend a mine told me a true story about himself that was totally hilarious yet had such implications I thought I would share it.

A few weeks back, this friend had gotten the flu. He hadn’t felt well at all. He would take his temperature and find that his feelings were correct as he did have a fever. This went on for a few weeks and he wondered why he still had a fever, as he seemed to be feeling better. Somehow he decided to go buy another thermometer. He bought an inexpensive digital one and took his temperature. He was amazed. He had no fever. The old thermometer he told me must have been a pre-1940 one. It said he had a fever of 99.6. He had believed the thermometer. He had believed a lie.

Often times we believe things that are untrue just as my friend had done. The devil is quick to put into our mind lies, as he can never tell the truth. He can only tempt us to accept or believe the lie but we are the ones that decide to call it truth. We are told that as a man thinketh so is he. I imagine that if this man had believed the lying thermometer long enough, the devil would probably have accommodated him and he would have had a fever. He definitely believed a lying symptom. Many times what we believe does not line up with Gods Word and we call it truth. To me this is why that Gods word is so important. We must know what truth is to be able to recognize when a lie has approached our thinking. Many times we think we are a certain way yet we are not. We may be believing a lying symptom instead of the truth of what God says about it. Sometimes when we think that we are sick, we are going by feelings and those feelings are just lying symptoms from the devil.

I am reminded of the scripture about love. 1 Cor 13:5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil. The scripture says thinketh no evil. How often does the enemy come at us because of something that was said to us about someone else and we find that we end up thinking evil of the person? The thermometer can be another person or the devil. We need to get our facts straight sometimes before we accept these words as truth. Sometimes what we gauge our belief upon is inaccurate. We are to make righteous judgments not unrighteous ones.
