Keeping Our Word

Some time ago I wrote a poem entitled “Words”. These are a few lines from it that I am basing this article on.

Words are so binding
That sometimes they must be few
If we are going to represent Jesus
Then what we say, then we must do

When we speak words, we are planting seeds. Some words will bring forth good fruit, and some will bring forth bad fruit. This is depending on if we back up our words with our actions. We may mean well when we speak words, yet because we are not led by the Holy Spirit to speak, or we just have not made it a priority to follow through, people become untrusting of us. I know of people that say many things, yet I have learned that they rarely do what they say, so I let those words go in one ear and out the other. As a Christian, since we have Jesus that we are representing, then the words we speak become very important. We can have it all together so to speak yet we don’t follow through on what we say, so people find themselves unwilling to trust us very far.

Psalms 138:2 I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

The scripture above shows how important God’s word is to Him. He magnifies it above His name. If Jesus is in us and we are led by the Holy Spirit, then shouldn’t it be as important to us to be doing the same thing? I don’t know about anyone else, but keeping my word has always been a priority with me. Yes, there are times I have been unable too like anyone else, yet if that happens, I try to go to the person and explain or apologize. Leaving them with the bad taste is not very cool. It creates walls. It separates people. It causes distrust. I realize that this may seem a small thing to many, but what happens as a result to relationships can become enormous. I would like to encourage others to become more aware of making commitments to others through words. If you are unsure if you can keep your words, for the sake of others, please do not tell them you will definitely do something. Everyone is better off if they just never say anything.
