I Never Knew You

We do so many things
Though outwardly appear, to be right
But did we seek His will
And cry out to Him all night?

Did we follow the Holy Spirit
Did we wait for His still small voice
Or did we just make our plans
And never give the Lord a choice?

We fed the poor
And clothed the bare
We helped the stranger
And showed him that we care

We gave our time
And our money too
But did we ask Jesus
What would You have me to do?

Did we spend our time
Doing many good works for man
Or did we fast and pray
And seek to find only His plan

I am reminded of the scripture
In Mathew 7:22
That to our glorious works
Jesus said, “I never knew you”

The will of God is not based in our works
Though outwardly they may seem okay
But too truly follow Jesus
We must seek and find His plan, each day

In Zechariah four and six
I found the best answer that I know
It is not by my might nor power
But by His Spirit, I must go

Each of us are called
To do a special work for him
But many get so involved with their own works
They miss what He really desires, for them

Until we learn to pray
All night long, if need be
And hear from Him alone
His path, we may never see

His will does not come easy
As we must give up the desires of self
Our heart must want only Him
And our will must be put upon the shelf

We try to act out God’s Word
Under the guise of a religious spirit
And then we seem to wonder
Why the world won’t hear it

God’s Word empowered
Cannot be blocked
For the hardest of hearts
It will, unlock

I don’t want to stand before Jesus
With all the works I did do
And have Him say to me
I never knew you.
