Prayers

If Thy people go out to battle
against their enemy,
by whatever way
Thou shalt send them,
and they pray to the Lord
....hear Thou in Heaven
their prayer,
and their supplication,
and maintain their cause.

Where ARE You?
LORD!
LORD?"

[SILENCE]

"I bet You're
not even listenin'
to me!"

[SILENCE]

"I bet You can't
even HEAR me!"

[SILENCE.]

"What am I doin':
TALKIN' to myself?"

[SILENCE.]

"Yeah. That's it.
Maybe, I'm
just bein' a fool."

[SILENCE]

"Forget it!
This is ridiculous.
There must be some
sort of gene, or somethin',
that makes people
look up at the stars...."

"And do what, child?"

".....and ask for help.
(silence)
Hey, there are You
are, Lord.
I bet I'm right, aren't I?
I bet there's some
sort'a gene."

[SMILE.]

"It's called the prayer gene."

[PATIENT NOD.]

"It's next to the
cat and dog gene."

"What is that, My precious."

"What? Oh.
Well, that's the
gene that makes
some people like
cats, and
some people like dogs.
It's a very important
gene."

[SOLEMN NOD.]

"I think it was discovered
in 1953: in London, England."

[LAUGH.]

"Hey, Lord:
wasn't there some kind'a
MOTH, out there, that
evolved into this sooty-speckled
moth because it lived
near the coal factories,
or somethin'.?
(silence)
Wasn't that, like,
some kind'a proof of evolution,
or somethin'?
What were 'Ya doing:
just playin' a joke?
Come on: You can tell me.
I won't tell anybody."

[LAUGH.]

"But, it was TRUE, Lord!
It WAS!
There was this MOTH -
or fat butterfly -
that, like, turned
gray, in like,
TWENTY years,
or somethin'!
It was really WEIRD!"

[SMILE.]

"Hey, Lord?
Am I wasting Your
time, just talkin',
when other people
are tryin' to get
Your attention
with more serious stuff?"

"No, My precious."

(silence)
"Did 'Ya hear
really serious prayer,
before, Lord?"

"Yes, child."

"Okay. But,
I'm still waiting for
an answer.
(silence)
I mean, about the moth."

"I know, My child."

"Well, and about
the other thing."

[NOD.]

"Lord?
When'r You come
get us?"

"Soon, child.
Soon."
