I see your face

I see your face a-peeping round the door,
Your pixie–like, mischievous face befreckled o'er;
The sun is glinting in your eyes
Your mouth is open in surprise,
I'm just about to ask you why -
And then I awake and remember.

I see the flowers upon the table,
The precious violets and daisies;
I smell their fragrance in the air,
Their scent that lingers everywhere;
I reach my hand to touch your hair -
And then I awake and remember.

I hear the voices in the garden,
The merry, tripping sound of children;
I hear a cheerful ringing cry
That seems to echo to the sky;
I wonder why my throat feels dry -
And then I awake and remember.

I remember the terror-filled screams in the cornfield,
The blood-stained knife of a madman,
The solemn black clothes of the policeman,
The freshly turned earth in the graveyard,
The long, silent hours by the fireside,
The small empty bed of my darling,
The nights I awake to remember.

And now my life is worth nothing
To me a poor, childless widow;
I feel myself falling,
I hear God's voice calling,
I'll awake in the morning
But never again to remember.

I'll awake to feel a warmth in my soul
In a land where suffering and death are no more;
And you will come running,
Your golden hair tumbling,
Your infant's eyes sparkling
To rest in my arms.

This poem grabbed me and I felt it's intenseness.
