There has been endless speculation about who this woman really was: sister of Martha and Lazarus? former prostitute? woman with the alabaster box of ointment? And it matters little. What we know from Scripture is that she was from Magdala and was a devoted disciple of Jesus after He healed her of demonic possession. She, along with many other women, shared what they had with Him during His earthly ministry.

Last at the cross and first at the tomb, Mary came searching for her Lord's body early on Resurrection morning. Seeing a man she thought to be the gardener, she asked where they had laid Him. But it was Jesus Himself, and he spoke her name, "Mary." She joyously answered, "Rabboni", and fell at His feet. It was a moving and tender moment. But beyond that, there is beautiful symbolism here: a powerful perspective. In this poignant scene in the Garden, a loving Savior recognizes a chastened, repentant sinner (symbolizing all of us), in sweet reconciliation. What a precious thought to hold onto through life: that if we have been faithful in the manner of Mary, one day He will meet us, call our names and take us home!
