Devoid of good, without a righteous thought,
There was no way I could be wholly wrought;
I saw the flames, and smelt my own destruction,
Yet had no strength to follow Your instruction;

My desperate heart moved my unclean mouth,
Heard myself cry, “Mercy!”; a pathetic shout;
You drew me in, for I was so undone,
Led me to Your grace, found only in Your Son;

Days of joy, for me, followed my days o’ grief,
For my days of desperation made me shout my plea;
In Your time, You showed me all my need,
To keep me in Your loving grace; all I could was plead;

So now I see Your love, found in desperate heart,
For it was to that heart, I saw Your grace impart;
My pathetic state led me to Your love,
Infinite in depth and width, below and above;

So I embrace my desperation, for there I now find You;
I gladly declare myself as false, because I see You true;
There is nothing good in me I will rightly laud;
I rejoice that I’m so human, because You are my God;

I cling to Your robe, with its scent of myrrh,
For Your very Person is my spirit’s gird;
My desperate death will bring me to Your mercy,
Where I will fly to You, oh so very desperately!
