Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday September 11, 2007

Six years ago today! I talked with a man early this morning over coffee and asked him what he was doing on the morning of that fateful day. He asked why I thought he would remember what he was doing on this day six years ago? He had no idea why September 11, 2001 should be seared into his memory.

I know exactly what I was doing and exactly where I was when I heard the news of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. I know exactly were and what on VJ Day. Some events live, as they should, in our minds and hearts for the remainder of our earthly life.

September 11, 2001 the wife called from her office high atop the educational tower at ISU and told me an airliner had crashed into the world trade center. At that point this was still considered accidental. I went to Doug Humphrey's garage to have my very high mileage car worked on in preparation for a trip to Alabama for a revival meeting with Joe Sollars. I sat in the office and thought as I watched the film, "I am a pilot and that is no accidental hit." Just then the live coverage of the second crash came on the air. How could anyone ever forget such a morning when the Free World was under direct attack by Moslem extremists?

It is near impossible to get the average American to understand let alone face the facts presented by the extreme Muslims. We as a people want to believe the best about everyone, including the Islamic mass that follow the commands of their leaders to mutilate the female private parts, and just today (09-10-07) the major news was carrying the story of a girl who was ordered to be raped because her brother had married someone from another region. I already know any religion has the nut case fringe, but in the world religions with which I am reasonably familiar the sane branch repudiates the extreme thought and action of the lunatic fringe. The outcry by self proclaimed Islamist faithful is near silent, with but a few notable exceptions.

The solution to the current terror problem is to awful to mention, yet time will prove its necessity.

To many minds the "War On Terror" is a ploy to cause Americans to acquiesce ever more rights in the name of safety, why even Federal Prison Libraries have excluded the books of the well known fomenter of terror, Robert Schuller, from their shelves.

I live across the street from a veteran of the Gulf War, the current war in Afghanistan and the war in Iraq. He is nice guy and a great neighbor with a super Chocolate Lab puppy. He is likely to be called to another round in Iraq.

A preacher friend of mine told me with tears in eyes that his grandson is on his way to Iraq. Are these men against risking their own or the life of a loved one on behalf of our country? Far from it, they are against the continued playing footsie with avowed enemies whose one goal in life is the utter destruction of the United States and thus all of Christian/Western Civilization.

I am astounded that so many men and women have sit back and let 9/11 fall into the labyrinth of things forgotten. Those who teach how to improve your memory point out that we can and do recall the things and people that matter to us at the emotional level. So, where were you on September 11, 2001?

I get the same strange feeling when someone tells me, "Oh, yes I am saved, but I have no recollection of when or where." How can this be?
