Try praying for the one who has hurt you in the worst way. Not just once--every day, on purpose, earnestly and honestly, actually begging God for his/her well-being. Not just words, but from your heart, substance not just form. Repeat every day for at least a month. You will discover after a time that you no longer despise that person. You, in fact, have joined God in loving him, God's kind of love, putting his welfare above your own. You are a victim of the one you hate, but now you are free. You are on his side. You have stepped outside the hurt, no longer the hapless victim. You have chosen to live beyond the reach of hatred for anyone. That's where God is.

After all, He loved us even though we sinned against Him, despitefully used Him. But He chose to bless us anyway with the Gift of His only Son. He loved us into obedience. His method works.

"But God demonstrates His own love toward us in that while we were still siners, Christ died for us." Rom. 5:8

Besides that, if we don't forgive others, we break the bridge we ourselves have to cross.

Praying continually for a certain family member who has hurt me deeply has been a salve of healing for my mind. Thanks for sharing.

I believe that we ourselves are the captives when we refuse to extend forgiveness. We are trapped in a sea of anger and hatred and bitterness--meanwhile, our 'target' usually just goes on unaware with their own business. The only way to be free is to ask for forgiveness for ourselves, learn to say I'm sorry and I forgive you and mean it, and always keep in our minds and hearts the truth--that since we have been forgiven, we must also forgive. Thanks for a drill to overcome hatred. So many preach forgiveness but offer no way to accomplish it. I, like most others, have a real problem in this area. I'll try your technique. It can't be too off the wall. Jesus suggested it.
