JOY IN THE SMALLEST OF THINGS

The joys of life can be found in the smallest of things. This has been a wretchedly hot and dreadful summer here in Kentucky. We are in critical draught conditions and the fields are filled with grass that isn’t growing for the farmers to gather for their animals, ponds that are drying up and flowers that are dying because we are under a do not water warning. The wildlife that was plentiful has hidden itself from the meadows and the feeding in the fields. The coyote, lean, mean, bones showing as it wanders the fields seeks prey to fill his empty stomach.

In the last week God has sent me a small reminder about Himself. Prompting me that He is in control of life and the seasons and that faith is most effective when we rely on Him for everything I see God’s presence everywhere. I have had a couple of humming birds throughout the spring and summer who drink from my feeders. Within the last week or so that number has increased to twenty-two of the little creatures, as best as I can count. They come and eat and squeaking little chirp is uplifting as they fill the air like a swarm of bees. So why are they here? Why, when I’ve hoped to have them come and feed, are they here when I least expect it?

The answer to these questions is quite simply that God acts in His own time. He is in control of the smallest of things and the greatest of things. Joy is often found in the most unexpected things and sitting under my carport, watching these little creatures reassures me of the presence of my God in all area of life. Whatever God brings is for His people and that we would be reminded that God cares for us.

I am reminded of the old song, “His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches over me.” Thank you my Lord, my God for your presence and for the joy of the hummingbirds flittering overhead. Amen
