To My Dad

Before we first met, you bought me a truck,
My name was to be Robbie, your boy, your young buck.
Plan and dreams, you had them all
To fish, and to hunt, and to play ball.
A son and a dad was nothing but proper,
Then we were introduced by a nurse and a doctor.
When I was born, I was mad at the world.
The doctor announced, "You have got a girl!"
All wrinkled, wet, yucky, and blue,
Screaming, yelling, and kicking some too.
As the doctor placed me into your arms,
I found a safe place to keep me from harm.
As you first gazed onto my newborn face,
It placed a lasting memory that could not be replaced.
Looking at you with my baby-eyed stare,
I had found my first love, as I was placed in your care.
From diapers and bottles, to dolls that could talk,
I grew like a weed and learned how to walk.
Holding onto my hand as I walked around the room,
Did you ever think that I would grow up so soon?
Wrestling, hugging, and stealing your lunch,
I knew Dad, you loved me a bunch.
Riding your leg up the stairs to my bed,
Reading bedtime stories to your sleepy head.
Stories of puppies and Skipper, the cat.
Stories of Jesus, I always loved that.
"Tuck me In, tuck me in" I would say,
Then we'd close our eyes and pray.
Then you would walk out and turn off the light,
Before you got down, I'd yell "Night, Night."
"I love you daddy," "I love you, too".
We'd say to each other like we always do.
I'm sure it feels like yesterday, when I was so young,
But remember Daddy, you were my first love.
As I became a teenager, some times we had were tough,
But the unconditional love you always gave was enough.
Now here I am with kids of my own,
And it won't be very long until they are grown.
Thanks for the lasting memories, that will always be there,
Thanks for teaching me to love God and all about prayer.
Thank you Dad for your love like God gives from above,
What a perfect comparison, to a perfect love.
You will always be my first love.
(Poem partly take from a poem my father wrote for me on my wedding day.)
