Trapped inside an unseen space,
The trap that is my heart;
A mirror that only shows my face;
With a heart that falls apart;

I’m sick with dread of this trap;
“Father! Save me from me!”
Suffocating in a selfish wrap,
And from this self I cannot flee;

Then someone comes into my life,
With pain that I can’t fathom;
Not my part to grasp their strife,
Just to simply love them;

With this gift, found in this person,
Other gifts pour forth and blossom;
A joy o’ love for one that’s hurting,
Desiring grace to come for them;

Then another comes to me,
With heartache from simply living;
I find I give hope e’er freely,
While keeping what I’m giving;

And then I saw the dread had left,
But only when those gifts came back;
The tearing heart once bereft,
Full, lessened of the selfish slack;

He comes to me in other faces,
With hearts so torn and fallen apart;
They stir in me the divine graces,
Of godly love that will not part;

I see in me the other Man;
The Lover of my soul;
In the mirror; the great I AM,
With His heart so whole.

He tells me, “I will not leave,
I have taken the selfish slack;
By My love, we are cleaved,
And by it, I’m trapped.”
