Among the Seminole Nation of Indians there are many legends and tales told by wise old men and equally wise old women passed down from generation to generation. This is one of those stories.
Long ago before those with the long knives came to the land lived an older brother and his younger sister. The land was beautiful with many streams, ponds and lakes teeming with fish, mussels, and shell fish of many kinds and tree bearing many kinds of fruit and nuts. Supporting them was eleven clans so no one ever went hungry, without clothing, or companionship.
In time, the older brother and younger sister grew up apart as he wanted to acquire more things. Seeking his fortune, older brother went to a distant land while younger sister remained in their village. While in the village among her clan, younger sister cooked corn soup and fry bread daily enough for all of the clan members and her own immediate family. She also cooked corn soup and fry bread as an offering to God for the safe return of her older brother.
The charity food, as it was called by the clan members, was picked up daily by a Crazy Man from a nearby tribe who just appeared one day to eat, entertain and enjoy the company of the eleven clans and their members. Instead of showing his gratitude with a prayer to God for the safe return of the older brother, Crazy Man had an irritating way of taking the corn soup and fry bread then bellowing out an old couplet:
The Evil you do stays with you,
The Good you do comes back to you!
One year, three years, five years passed before the older brother returned to the peaceful village of the eleven clans. The older brother had learned many things while he had left to seek his fortune. Though he sought he did not find what he was looking for. Rather he learned to be aloof, suspicious, and to covet what he believed others had that he did not have or perceive he did not have. He also brought with him a woman of the long knives, their two children, and a man named “Aldrin” to advise him in all matters.
In time, older brother learned that his young sister had become quite popular, well-liked and well-known within the eleven clans and in the surround area for her kindness, compassion, and charity. Her reputation angered her older brother who felt he should be so honored among the clans and in the surrounding area though he did nothing to earn such favor. With Crazy Man and Aldrin by his side, older brother complained bitterly about the situation to clan members who were stunned by his behavior. Soon older brother could not stand the situation. In a secret meeting with Aldrin and Crazy Man, older brother put a fatal dose of belladonna in the corn soup and fry bread she was preparing for herself, the clan and people in the surrounding area.
“Today will be the last day I will ever have to listen to the wretched stories about my sister’s goodness, compassion and charity. I’ll take her place and prepare the corn soup and fry bread to give to all. They’ll praise me. They’ll love me. They’ll make me God among the people,” sneered older brother. “Won’t it be wonderful!!!!?”
Within three days, younger sister, the eleven clans and most of the people in the surrounding area were dead. Realizing what he had done, older brother flung the poisoned corn soup and fry bread into the fire. The next morning Aldrin, Crazy Man and older brother met with each other again to try to determined what they were going to do.
“I’ve murdered my sister. I’ve killed member of my clan and the other clans. I’ve killed all the people in the surrounding area. Who is going to thank me for my corn soup and fry bread,’ lamented older brother.
“We’ll praise you! We’ll thank you! We’ll make you famous!” shouted Crazy Man.
“Yes, we most certainly will!” Aldrin repeated enthusiastically. “So why don’t you get started making the corn soup and fry bread. We’re starving. Me and Crazy Man will go into the surrounding area to find other people who we can feed and make you famous and love you.”
“Alright! Okay!” responded older brother. Soon he began preparing the corn soup and ingredients for the fry bread. Then he realized how much effort it took to prepare this meal. “My sister did this everyday?” lamented older brother. “How could she stand this? I need help preparing this much food!”
The following day older brother came to Crazy Man and Aldrin. “Will you help me prepare and cook the corn soup and fry bread, please?”
“What do you mean?” they responded in unison.
“We’re no cooks. And based upon that slop you made yesterday neither are you. Unless you or we learn to cook, we’re going to starve to death. Remember I’m a Crazy Man. I don’t know anything. All I know how to do is to do stupid things. And Aldrin over here, he’s good at lying and deceiving people into doing equally stupid things. You, older brother, are good at foolishness. Just being truthful,” responded Crazy Man.
“So what are we going to do?” queried older brother.
“How ‘bout we go our separate ways?” retorted Aldrin.
“WHAT?” cried older brother. “I can’t do that! I have no one. I killed them off on behalf of us. Now you’re telling me to go off on my own? What am I going to do?”
“Well, its like this older brother, I’m good at playing the fool. So I’m going to learn my keep in another tribe by being a fool,” said Crazy Man.
“Me,” replied Aldrin. “I’m good at poisoning people and killing things. I’m going to make a living by executing people in another tribe when their authorities give me the okay. Or…maybe not!”
“But what about me?” older brother shouted.
“You don’t need to worry about a thing,” sneered Aldrin. “That garbage you called food had a little something extra for you and your remaining family.”
“What a man sows, that shall he also reap.”
