Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

Read: Acts 2:44-47

Now all that believed were together and had all things in common.

I can remember helping our son, Mario, with a geography assignment when he was in the fourth grade at Horace Mann Elementary School in Shawnee, Oklahoma. It was then that I realized I would probably never meet people from faraway places such as Sri Lanka and Ivory Coast. It was a sad thought because some of those people, my family nor I would ever become friends. On Mario’s copy machine printed map I let my finger touch the South Asia subcontinent then slide over to West Africa where Ivory Coast is.

“Hey, dad what are you doing?” Mario asked.

“Oh, just thinking of how there are so many great people in all these places of the world and we will probably never have the opportunity to get to know them nor they us. I’m thinking that the majority of people in these countries are probably a lot like us and we might be friends with them and learn about their culture, their beliefs or how they relate to each other within their families.”

Only recently have I come to understand that God has given me a way in which I can make contact and in fact interact with people in a faraway country. Through my writing and the internet, people in distant places and nations can and have reached out to me and I them. Some of us have become friends through countless e-mails, message boards, instant messaging, sharing our joys, disappointments and prayers.

There are many people worldwide just waiting to be friends with us/you—Our neighbors, if You will. Won’t you be my/our neighbor?

Prayer: Almighty Father, thank You for the wonderful people You have given us. Help us to circle Your world with it.
