Will I know you in heaven?

Today in SS class we had a discussion about whether we would know our family members and friends in heaven or not. Most thought we would while others said no, the Bible does not specifically say that. Except when David and Bathsheba’s baby died - it says David said “I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.” 2Samuel 12:23 KJV

Also, on the Mount of Transfiguration, the disciples recognized Moses and Elijah even though they had lived hundreds of years before. How did they know them? Did Jesus give them spiritual insight?

I would like to get your feedback on this subject. I tend to think we will know each other. Otherwise, what about our reward for leading lost people to Christ? Don’t you think we will be able to see and talk to the souls who we have impacted for the cause of the gospel?

Paul says this mortal life cannot be compared to the things of heaven. That “For now we know in part but when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.” 1 Corinthians 13: 9-10 “One day the things that are not clear to us will be made clear.” (vs. 12)

If God reveals all things to us, then it is reasonable to believe that we will have the ability to recognize those who we’ve known, right?

In Revelation 21 verse 4 it says there will be no more death, sorrow, crying or pain and God shall wipe away all tears from our eyes.

The point was brought up that in heaven, if there will be no more sorrow, and if we do recognize our loved ones, won’t we be sad if we realize certain people are not there? Is that part of what verse 4 means when it says God will wipe away all our tears? Or will God erase our memory of those loved ones who didn’t make it to heaven with us? This part stumps me.

A Very profound question;which shall be reavealed to us when we get there!I do believe we will know our Loved ones in Christ,in Heaven!Yes,in That Glorious place called Heaven their is a Blessed reunion that awaits to be with family and friends and to Behold the Lamb's Glorious Face.OH,Heaven will be perfect Because God is PERFECT!

A very enlightening article, and good question. I have thought a lot about the fact that God will remove all memory of our friends who will not be with us in heaven. It is a very painful thought.... As for knowing each other, yes, I have thought of that too. We will not only know those with whom we are physically acquainted, but we will recognize those we have not met in person - like, I will know you and you will know me. That is a great thought.

I have pondered this many a time Julia, still do but look to His Word and understand that we probably will not know each other in Heaven.

How important it is to witness for Christ as much as possible to whomever we can , through our words, writings and prayers. Salvation is mankind's greatest need. The One we all need to know is jesus Christ.

Revelation 21:4
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

2 Peter 3:
10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,

Ecclesiastes 1:11 There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

Boy, is this a can of
worms. There's the
whole issue of running
into ex-husbands, ex-wives,
and their NEW spouses;
oy vey! I've tried to
figure out about MY
situation; I've come to
Christ, and my whole
family's Jewish; so,
how is that gonna' work?
Maybe, God'll give me,
like, some weekend passes
or something, so I can
go visit with them.
The thing I'M worried
about, is this Judgment Seat
for Christians. It's
ALREADY got me anxious.
Personally, I don't think
it's fair, and I have
voiced my opinion to Him,
but He just gives me a
bored look. JO

First of all, I don't think God intended for His children to get all worked up over that issue. He is all wise, and He has it all worked out according to His will. To me, being in Heaven with Him will be just fine, whether I remember anybody from my earthly association or not. However, I firmly believe from what I have understood in Scripture that we will know each other. Would it make any sense to spend eternity with someone and be complete strangers to them? Paul says we know in part here, but there we will know fully. That tells me things we do not understand here on earth will be clear to us there. I accept that at face value.

Remember when Christ was transfigured. Who did Peter recognize as coming down to visit with Jesus? He recognized Moses and Elijah. Now, Peter had never seen Moses and Elijah face to face. He was not even born when they were on earth. So how did he know who they were? I would think there was something about Moses and Elijah that made it clear to Peter who they were. I think there will be something about all God's children's identities that will be recognizable to all.

It is not going to make any difference if we are there with two or three different spouses we had on earth, for marriage is not a factor there. The Bible makes that plain when it states there will be no giving in marriage there. The only wedding in Heaven will be when we, the saved, are taken to be Christ's bride.

In love, please let me say this: We should not cause divisions among ourselves over those things, for they have nothing to do with our salvation, and they are not doctrinal issues over which Christ wants us to be concerned.

Whew! I sure hope I have not made anybody mad. (smile)

Thought provoking indeed. As for my opinion. What joy there will be to see those who we have loved in this world and those whose lives we have touched, but I think we miss the point when we try to put heaven in a box. What is the activity most discussed about heaven? Worshipping the Lord face to face. I love my family and friends with a full heart, but that love is very dim compared to the love I have for the Lord. If you step back for a second and put the two next to each other. The loves we know here and being in the presence of the Lord... Our new bodies will be made in perfection as originally design to worship with God, the Father. Looking at Genesis we know that God gave Eve as a companion for Adam, so there is a designed relationship. Now jump to Revelations and see what John's vision is focused on in Heaven. The worshipping of God. That said, another point to look at is in Heaven all souls will be family therefore their will may be an equal love for each member. Again the most dominating "theme" on Heaven is being in the Lord's presence, I don't see how a pure heart could be distracted from focusing on the Lord. Would I like to think that I will have my family and friends in Heaven, yes. But my limited mind cannot fathom anything coming before the Lord.

I also believe we will know each other in Heaven - where else? Even as a body of Christ we will be more complete and more unified and perfect, so I think we would know each other. Even without introductions, we would know those we haven't met.
