I Trust You, Lord

When just a child, I learned to whisper 'Jesus'

Each night, before my sleepy eyes would close;

A formulated plan became my mandate ~

A way of life, with age, that only grows.

As I grew up, independent and so headstrong,

I called that Name when times of deep distress

Had flung me down and left me there, so helpless;

Wallowing, in vain, in my own mess.

Easy enough to praise in times of triumph,

When the rainbow’s shining in the sky;

Trusting is so easy with the dawning,

When the trial’s passed, sing loud and high!

But, when the ashes smolder hot and angry,

When the mound of earth falls on your own,

When the heart break is alive within your breast ~

Say, dear one, where has trusting gone?

Mid tears of anguish, then I weep, “I love You”.

I’m old, now (trusted Him so long).

My habit’s, formed in childhood, still do operate ~

I sing a lower sweeter praising song.

And yes, my voice breaks in the chords of ecstasy,

Vibrato turns to quivering unsure notes.

But, it’s that Name I trust, now, more than ever;

The Name that fills my heart ~ my only blessed Hope!
