Indelible Memories

I stood waist high to Grandmother that morning...
Light, filtering through the stained glass windows, left puddles of color all over the room.
Songs were sung...then a hush fell over the congregation as everyone stood to their feet.

I didn’t understand it all,
But I was marked forever, (like the”indelible ink” pencils we used on occasion) ~ as the bread and grape juice was passed.
My smiley little face was stone sober
as Grandmother invited me to participate.

I think I might have been 5 or 6 years old.
We had always lived in the country, and
I had never been to church before that I can remember.
Now... in my latter years, I wonder that this capsule
of memory quite often invades my mind.

How precious this ceremony has become to me
through the years!

I went out to play that day in a Springtime mood.
Dreaming everything from living in the jungle
with Tarzan and Jane to becoming a nurse, a singer,
a horseback champion with Dale and Roy,
but always a mother.
I went to school reading the tales of the times and the poetry.
I dreamed of the ships, the castles, the knight in shining armor.
Always God was a part of the dreams, but
I didn’t understand much then...
I didn’t doubt much either.
Little episodes ~ frozen in cubicles in my mind.

Now, I am thankful for that morning filled with awe
for me. I doubt Grandmother had any idea it would
etch itself so permanently in my memory.

I’ll tell her when I get Home.
I’ll thank her for letting me tag along.
Looking back, I’m sure she gave me that morning
The gift of Faith.
