Faith

O God,
Thou art my God,
I seek Thee,
My soul thirsts for Thee;

why sometimes I get
so mad at You."

"Why, child?"

"Well, this sounds dumb,
but, I think it's because
by getting mad, I can push
You away. I push You
away, Lord, because
I am afraid."

"Of what, child?"

[whisper]
"Afraid of.....
of loving You."

[SILENCE.]

"I mean, suppose I
gave all of my love to
You.........and, then
You hurt me?
What then?
[silence]
No! No, Lord!
I cannot do it!
I am too afraid!
You, too,
will hurt me!
No! I must
protect myself."

"Who am I, child?"

"Well, You know,
Lord."

"WHO?"

"Ya'know;
uh, the Master of
the universe."

[Nod.]

"Yeah, but I've
been hurt by...."

"Those greater
than Me, child?"

"Well, I think they
mighta' THOUGHT they
were!"

[SMILE.]

"Yeah, but they had
a lot going for THEM,
too, Lord!"

[SMILE. NOD.]
"Ah, I see.
Tell Me once more, child:
Who am I?"

"The Creator of Pluto?"

"Go on."

"Lord, You know,
this may be an aside,
but, I don't really see
a whole lot with Pluto.
I mean, why did You
make it, anyway?"

"The same reason I made
you, child."

"Why: because I'm small,
rocky, dark, and far away?"

[LAUGH.]
"No, precious.
Because, I love you.
And, that is all you
need to know."

[silence]
"But....it can't be that
simple, Lord. Because,
if it is, then..."

[GENTLY.]
"Then what, child?"

"Then, all I HAVE to
do...."

"Is what, child?"

"Is love YOU."
