LOVE COVERS

Thanksgiving Day, and the meal I said I wouldn’t do again, was finished. My legs
were tired but my heart was full. Things were still not the way I wished, but there
were loved ones around me and at least one little one. She was delightful this day!
I saved the brown sugar for her to dump in the yams. I saved the bananas for her
to cut with a case knife for the orange salad. How she loved to help! It was a very
emotional thing for her. She was (of her own admission,) “full of vinegar!”
I had made a small “dump” cobbler with apples and she was enchanted. I wasn’t sure she would love to eat it that much, so I helped her get a small amount the ‘first’ time.
She took off at full speed to show her mother and dad, but in a flash she was back -
this time in tears.
“What’s the matter, honey?’ More tears...another question...then:
“See for yourself!” and she ran into the other room.

I suspected the spill. The bowl was still upside down over it. I picked up the bowl and gathered the juicy apples, quickly grabbed a small towel and threw it over the
spot. In the cupboard I grabbed a clean dish and scooped up a spoonful of fresh
apple dump cobbler.
I found her crouched by the clothes hamper crying.
“Look, honey....(showing her the new bowl), why are you crying? You didn’t spill that much...and there’s more!”
“You told my Daddy!”
“No...I didn’t...you didn’t mean to, did you?”
“You told my Mommie!”
“No, I didn’t.”
“You told Grandpa!”
“No, honey, I didn’t tell them. No one knows but you and me.”
She looked at me in disbelief. Big blue, teary eyes shining and a smile beginning to
grow....
“Don’t you know Love covers? Love covers all our flaws and hides our faults...Grandma loves you. Why would I want to spoil anything, especially today?”
“See, honey, that’s what Jesus does for us. He covers us with His red blood as a
shield, and, believe it or not, we look white and pure and perfect!”
She gave me a hug, a penetrating look, and took off with the fresh bowl, turning just once to smile as she turned the corner, and I wondered if she would remember when she is 70 that Love Covers.
