and put him in the Garden
of Eden to till it

"Oh. No way, Lord!
Although, perhaps, You
might still consider it?"

[SILENCE.]

"Okay! Okay!
Forget about that stuff.....
for now.
(Hopeful silence.)
Anyhow, I just wanted
to ask You about Eden, Lord."

"What about it."

"Well, I was looking at this
book, this morning....."

"My Book, child?"

"Eh.....no, Lord."

"And why not, My child?"

"Well, Lord! You know, I
tend to read THAT right
before I go to SLEEP....."

"Ah. I see, My precious.
Go on."

"Well, anyway, in this
book was a picture of the
Garden of Eden......
I mean, it wasn't a photograph,
or anything."

[SMILE.]

"Yeah, but, in the picture,
all the shrubbery and grass
was neatly trimmed! The
lawns were perfectly mowed,
Lord! How did that happen?"

"It is a mystery, child.
Only Your Lord knows."

"Well, You did put Adam
in there, to 'till' it;
He must have been pretty
busy, before that Eve-
incident, huh."

"That, too, is a great
mystery, child."

"So, Lord; how long
WAS it before they
got kicked out by those
mean angels? Everybody's
always been curious about that."

"WHAT mean angels, My precious."

"You KNOW, LORD! Those....
where is it, here........You
know, those guys with
the nasty swords."

"Read it to Me, child."

"It must be on the next
page. Here it is:

The Lord God sent him
forth from the Garden...
He drove out the man
....at the East of the
Garden of Eden,
He placed the cherubim,
and a flaming sword which
turned every way,
to guard the way to the
Tree of Life.

Oh. Oh, Lord; YOU
drove them out!
That wasn't very NICE!"
So, like, the cherubims
were just following orders,
huh."

[NOD.]

"So, Lord; how long
WAS it? Weeks?
Days? It doesn't
really say."

"IT? What is IT,
My child?"

"Well, YOU.
You know, YOU, Lord.
Ya' don't really say
how long they got
to be in there.
How long was it,
anyway?"

"That is for ME
to know, My daughter.
Why are you so curious?"

"Well, if all those lawns
were as well manicured
as that book said, then....."

"What book."

"Oh, it's just a kid's
book, Lord. You
wouldn't be interested."

"I am interested in
everything, child."

"Oh, Lord. It's just
a cute, little book,
You know. I like the
pictures of all the
animals."

[NOD.]

"And, YOUR Book is
always kind of
depressing."

[RUMBLE.
MORE RUMBLE.]

"Well, I'm SORRY,
Lord! But, it IS!
I was reading Hosea,
last night. Goodness,
Lord, what a marriage
THAT was, huh? It
was like a SOAP OPERA!"

[SMILE.]
"And, My Book of
Matthew, My child?
When are you going to
read THAT?"

"Well, I skip around It,
Lord; You know: when
I'm looking for something
specific, or ........to write about."

"Ah. I see."

"Well, I just feel like that
a lot of it doesn't really
pertain to me, is all. Now,
Jeramiah, Isaiah, Ezekiel,
and those other guys -
I feel like I'm
right in the middle of it."

"You're right in the middle
of everything there,
My child."

"Neah, I don't think so."

[RUMBLE.
DOUBLE RUMBLE.]

"Well, Lord! I'm
JEWISH! You know
THAT! Most of that
New Testament stuff
doesn't......You know,
really INVOLVE me."

[SILENCE.]
"It involves everyone
on earth, My beloved.
Everyone: including YOU!"

"Okay! OKAY!
Don't get MAD at me!
I was just talking -
You know, Lord: kibitzing,
is all."

[NOD.]
"Nu, My beloved?"

"WHAT?"

"I am waiting."

"For what.
(Pensive silence.)
OH! Oh, You mean
when am I going to
read MATTHEW, Lord?
Well.......I'll start reading It!"

"WHEN?"

"Eh.....maybe, tonight:
before I go to sleep."

[HEAVY SILENCE.]

"Eh...You mean,
right NOW?
Oh, oh. Okay."

[NOD.]

"SEE, Lord?
I opened to IT.
See? Goodness....
look at all those
NAMES.......this is
going to be hard
to read....."

[NOD.]
"Read It, child."

"But why, Lord?"

"Who knows, My child?
One day, It might
just save you."
