C O M M O N S E N S E: Mother

Once upon a time, or so the story goes, there was a small, loving community of people, whose personality was that of a family. In this community was a woman grown old rising the children of her friends and their friends, as well as their children, for she had none. This small, loving community of people was happy one and all.

Then there came a dark cloud over the community and along with it a troubled young man. He brought fear. He brought anger. He brought guns and death. This small, loving community of people quickly fell cowering behind close curtains and double locked doors.

One day while sweeping her doorstep, the woman of some age witnessed this cruel and troubled young man knock a neighbor down, kicking them into submission.

“Hey! Stop that!” She cried. “Leave them alone!”

“Watch yourself old hag or you’ll get the same,” came the reply.

“I’m not afraid of you or the trouble you bring,” she shouted lifting the poor soul off the ground.

“What makes you so bold among this flock of sheep?” He questioned.

“My children.” She boldly proclaimed.

With a heartwrenching laugh he said, “You? I know about you. You have no children. There is no one able or willing to protect you.”

“I have hundreds of sons and daughters they will come and they will protect me.” She said stubbornly.

“Well, let them come for tonight, when I return, it will be your end.” He said with a tone of finality.

A quiet hush came over the community as morning passed into midday and then into night. Each soul shock behind their locked doors and shuttered windows as they remembered this woman called mother.

In her house, with multicolored plants lining her walk and a door of yellow and blue, she rocked repeating to herself, “You wait, they will come.”

Around midnight, a dark shadow fell upon the street where she lived and again that cruel laugh was heard. A click was heard as a magazine was fed into a gun. Rounding the corner, he came. There to greet him was every son and every daughter she had raised; this small, loving community of people.


COMMON SENSE SAYS: Love is not limited to biological parents, but every mother and every father who have cared and loved for those around them.
