What A Father!
© 2007

by

Stephen A. Peterson

“What’s the matter, princess?” asked Marilyn Roberts’ father.

“Nothing,” responded the 15 year old unconvincingly.

“Of course it isn’t nothing! You don’t act the way you’re acting about nothing, Marilyn.”

Still Marilyn insisted nothing was the matter despite quite obvious facial and behavioral evidence to the contrary. Sometimes Marilyn’s tears were over something so trivial she was ashamed to discuss them with her father. At other times the hurt was so deep that she did not want to reveal it even to him though father and daughter were very close. And sometimes Marilyn didn’t know what her problem was. She, just as the psalmist wrote, felt “cast down” and there was a said, unsettled, mournful mood within her person and soul that could not be expressed with words.

But when Marilyn’s father would ask her what troubled her and she would reply “Nothing,” he would generally say, “Well, whenever you decide that nothing is something, I’m here. In the meantime, my princess, remember I love you unconditionally every day and all the time. Just remember that, alright!”

Fortunately, Marilyn’s doleful periods were generally brief and when she had time to think about it, she was grateful for a father who loved her unconditionally in spite of her shifting moods. All humanity, likewise, have a Father Who understands and loves each and every person unconditionally even though some do not know it or, in the case of Marilyn, can’t tell Him exactly what is troubling them. How fortunate the Christian is to know such a Father and how tragedic for those who reject this loving Father!
