An Angel In Uniform

On a cold night in Kurdish Iraq, two young soldiers tried in vain to set up their squad’s large tent as ordered by their Platoon Sergeant. Their problem was they brought their own wooden pegs instead of the reddish-orange metal ones.

“Mack,” Danny said, “its going to be a real long, cold night if we aren’t able to get this darn tent up.” Mack nodded in complete agreement. In spite of having broken three wooden pegs, the two soldiers struggled on only to break two additional wooden pegs.

Then a Corporal appeared over the two soldiers’ soldiers’ shoulders, “You soldiers look like you could use a little, eh!”

The Corporal was about 6’5” tall and dressed in the same new Army Combat Uniform (ACU) as Mack and Danny. He, however, had a small sledge hammer and ten brand new shiny silver looking metal pegs. It took him no more than fifteen minutes with the help of Mack and Danny to set up the squad tent. Amazed at the speed the Corporal put up their tent, they stammered to thank him as the tall soldier moved on to help other struggling members of the Platoon with their tents.

“I was praying for somebody to help us.” Mack muttered, “but I never expected an angel in a uniform.”

Mack thought about the incident many times since. After careful consideration, he believed the Corporal was an angel. Mack and Danny never saw again nor was anyone in the Platoon ever able to account for the big soldier’s presence that early evening in Iraq. Several months after Mack’s and Danny’s experience, a near similar situation presented itself when a couple of struggling soldiers attempted to raise their tents in an Iraqi clay pan. It seemed as though it was a small pay back for a good deed show him when he was in need and desperate.

Why is this story being told? Well, just in the event you are skeptical regarding the existence of angels, you might be reminded to be on the look out. You might have been helped by one. Then too, you may very well be called upon the Master to serve as one!!!
