What Every Father Wants To Hear

It was 10:30 AM in the morning on a gray, cold, snowy February day in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. At this time, I try to go around the facility to greet as many clients as I can to, hopefully, motivate them in some manner to see life in a positive way. At times, I chat with staff about God or maybe about a Christian related topic. On this day, before I could make my rounds, the cellphone rang. Taking it off of my belt, I noticed it was home calling. I talked with my wife for maybe a minute or so. She indicated Terri, our youngest, insisted she had to talk to me.

For a couple seconds, I waited expecting to hear her voice so I thought my wife had hung up. Then there was the sound of a child’s voice. She said very softly: “I love you, daddy! When are you coming home?” Before I could respond, there was a chick. She was gone.

Leaving my office, I smiled and thought to myself how four short, simple words coming from the mouth of very young girl, your child, could shake my universe at that moment.

You know what it is when something wonderful and joyous appears to you. You want to share it. So I stopped what I was doing, then I said a prayer. This prayer was perhaps the most meaningful prayer I had said the entire day of many—“Jesus is with me. Jesus is in me. Thank You, Father, for everything You have given me especially my children, wife, family and friends! What wonderful gift!”

God, my Father. At times I have wondered if He really needs to know I love Him with the voice He has given me. I am so little, so insignificant in His huge universe. Among all of many billions of people does He even want to hear my voice?

Through the voice of a little girl, now I know. Every father needs to hear it from their child!!!
