The Healing Journey Home

“It is Multiple Sclerosis,” the doctor said. I sat there in disbelief. I knew that there was some sort of problem because of the symptoms that I had been having, but surely didn’t expect this. After that day in my doctor’s office, armed with some information and prescriptions, I began to pray for guidance and direction for the road ahead.

I was single, living in Las Vegas at the time, having left my hometown of Houston, Texas 14 years earlier determined to find success. Friends and family were supportive when they heard of my diagnosis but really didn’t know what to say. I kept trying to find comfort for the pain I was feeling but nothing seemed to help. It was only through prayer that I found some comfort.

A couple of months after my diagnosis, I was in a car accident, which exacerbated my situation significantly. Over the next six months, my situation deteriorated and I moved in with a friend. All the while, I kept praying for the Lord to guide and direct me since I had no idea of my future.

I began to feel that I was being led back to Texas, an idea, which I was not very thrilled with. My mother and I had been at odds with each other for quite some time. While I knew that I preferred living alone, I knew financially it would be easier to live at her house briefly. Part of me felt as if my mother and I were exact opposites and that we would just never get along.

I finally came to the decision to move back to Texas and from that point on, God began opening doors and moving in amazing ways. Everything began to fall in place, making the move fairly easy. Something interesting began happening during this time; I began writing poetry. Really, it was more like writing down what I heard the Lord laying upon my heart. I had written 3 poems in 1995 and never any more after that up to that point. After I made the decision to move back to Texas, the poems began coming frequently.

Now since I left Houston, my mother had moved up to a little town called Splendora, Texas with a population of 1,276. So I moved from Las Vegas, Nevada with its 24-hour glitz and glamour to Splendora, Texas, a sleepy little town 36 miles north of Houston.
I was in a culture shock, to say the least. While I missed the excitement and variety that Las Vegas had to offer, there was something very comforting about being back in Texas. With its kind people and relaxed pace, I felt a greater sense of peace and comfort which eased the transition process.
An amazing thing has happened over the next 12 months, my mother and I have had our ups and downs but have grown much closer and much more understanding of each other.
Also the Lord has blessed me with over 400 poems and opened the door for a book, ‘Whispers From Heaven’ to be published. My mother has also begun writing music to the poetry, something she hadn’t done in over 40 years. I am so grateful that the Lord has brought me on this healing journey, I believe, to repair this relationship with my mother. My health situation has also improved and I am taking my life day by day knowing that the Lord will lead me where He wants me to go.
