Larry Lilly's Letter Monday February 26, 2007

Every few days I try to write something humorous and I am amazed at how many people misinterpret my attempts at humor as serious writing. I don't mind this mistake all that much but it does hurt when my attempts at serious writing is laughed at by so many. I am getting used or hardened to it though.

In light of the election frenzy beginning to entertain the many and varied types in our land of the free and home of the brave, you can only imagine the joy in my heart when an old friend, Austin Bennett, sent the following statement by Ambrose Bierce:

"In our civilization, and under our republican form of government, intelligence is so highly honored that it is rewarded by exemption from the cares of public office."

The less favored run like lemmings to sea to win the approval of enough of the mass which are even less mentally endowed to vote for them, the savior to be of the republic, a republic that all except the reigning party will swear as a Revelation Angel, is rotten to the core. I read the other day where a would be presidential candidate from Delaware read a rousing speech to his enamored following which began with a suspect phrase, "Four score and seven years ago"….Members of the opposition took note of this speech and as I write they are searching the tomes in the Library of Congress, certain in the cavities where once hearts pumped good red blood that they have heard the phrase from either nobler or infamous lips, depending on their personal persuasion.

Thankfully a number of years ago the last man who could honestly or dishonestly lay claim to having been born in a log cabin that he built with his own hands was laid to rest. There are a number of reasons for this one among them being that certain members of a large righteous party have declared that they are light in the loafers and therefore the fear that due to their own shoes lasting longer they will raise tariffs on imported leather. These are from reason, or perhaps for no reason at all, called The Log Cabin Cadre. I initially thought they were trying to hook on to the coat tails of Lincoln. My little wife of these many years gave me the inside scoop, as the ladies at ISU where giggling about the group when they first came out. Pun intended.

I will say that am I happy being a preacher. I have no desire for public office and I do not need for someone of another faith to tell the people what I am going to say prior to my sermon, nor do I have to suffer the ignominy of having someone of yet another faith explain my remarks to my constituents, or if you prefer, my congregants, the hidden meaning of my remarks. I am certain my congregants would take umbrage at such insinuations concerning their intelligence. Politicos have no such concern.

The scripture is clear that we are to pray for our elected or appointed officials and this I do fervently. And why not, even God knows they are challenged and desperately need the prayers of every day people with common sense.
