Are you a person who is impatient--you don't like to wait around for things? You want them and you want them now. Well, surely, you think, God wants me to have these things--NOW!
So many lives are ruined, so many dreams are broken, so much sorrow is amassed by those who are hasty in the decision making department. We would do well to remember that we have been instructed to pray about everything first. If we would stick to this, then we could avoid a whole lot of trouble.
Take the young woman, perhaps, who is a single mother. She doesn't like being alone. She is worried over bringing up her children by herself. She wants to be married. Enter the fellow who says all the right things, does all the right things, wins over her children and her, impresses the folks. The knight in shining armor. Except, after the wedding, he's not quite the same person as before. The children seem to be getting on his nerves and he is short and impatient with them. He is overbearing in his desire to make his new family conform to his idea of being the head of the household. Having had no children until now, he isn't used to having their constant presence and so he tries to make them behave like adults would. But they can't, for they are just children. His wife wears herself out trying to keep the peace within her home, but she resents him all the same. Home has become a war zone instead of the haven she dreamed of. Because she is a Christian, divorce seems out of the question. Her previously happy children start to withdraw and seem angry but they say little. Why, the young woman asks herself daily, did she rush into this marriage? Why was she in such a hurry?
If she is honest, she will realize that she ignored the still, small voice that definitely spoke to her before the marriage. She just didn't want to hear it. She thought it was all just pre-wedding jitters, nerves on end as preparations went into full swing. But now, looking back, she recalls that voice very clearly telling her to step back. She recalls the unease she felt as plans chugged along full speed ahead but her enthusiasum waned for the 'project'.
This is merely an example. I'm sure you have many of your own. Haste makes waste is so true. If something is meant to be, it will be. If it isn't, you will know it. That voice within is your guide and you must listen to it.
Otherwise, you will find yourself in a mess of your own making. You won't be happy because you failed to listen for the instructions, which were prepared specifically for you. You left God out of it and anything that He isn't a part of is doomed to failure. Maybe not at first, but eventually.
Your life belongs to Him. He gets to be in charge, and yes, He gets to tell you what to do. And that is a most blessed thing.
Stop and listen. Pray. Wait. Then see where God wants you to go and what He wants you to do. When you are in His will, and you know you are in His will, you cannot go wrong!
