The fine art of procrastination!

If you will look in the dictionary you will see that the definition of procrastinate is to "put off doing something until a future time". My dad was an expert at procrastination and I inherited some of his skills. My mother, on the other hand, wanted things done "right now" as she often told my dad. No doubt my wife picked up on this "I want it done now" mentality from my mother.

My dad coined a phrase that I have often used successfully. The phrase was "when I get around to it".

"Fred, when are you going to plow the field"?

"When I get around to it".

Another phrase for procrastination is "dragging your feet". My boss for several years taught me this fine art. He would often say "Fred, if you don't want to do something, just "drag your feet". I have used this technique several times on my wife. I made the mistake of telling her about my boss and his method of putting things off until he "darn well felt like doing it". She told me one day when I was dragging my feet that she knew what I was doing and it "would not work with her". She is too smart for her own good.

Another phrase I have used quite successfully is "I'll start on it in the morning". Anybody that knows anything knows that "tomorrow never comes". I recently used this ploy to put off painting the bathroom and mowing the grass.

"Honey, when are you going to start the painting?"

"I plan to start in the morning".

Morning comes! "Are you going to start the painting today?"

"No, I need to mow the grass".

And as luck would have it the lawnmower blade needed sharpening, the carburetor needed cleaning, and I had to buy gasoline. By this time, the predicted rainfall had arrived. You can't mow grass or paint in wet weather. So, you see, by dragging your feet and putting things off until tomorrow, you can't do anything except go to the Mall and have a cup of Café Mocha.

I said all this to bring this point to our minds. It is possible to put off Salvation too long. God said in his word that he will not always strive with man--2Co 6:2 (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)

An example of this is found in the New Testament-- Ac 26:28 Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.
Ac 26:29 And Paul said, I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds.

We have no record of Agrippa ever becoming a Christian. Did he procrastinate too long? Did he put off salvation until he died? We will only know when we reach eternity.
