Larry Lilly's Letter Thursday February 8, 2007

Unlike many of my sourpuss professional friends, I love to laugh, and to the dismay of my psychologist friends, I rather enjoy laughing at people, I even laugh at myself. I laugh at myself because Joyce revels in laughing at me, so we both get in on the fun.

I received the following from a friend, Charlene Fisher, who suffers under the ministry of a pastor friend:

"My sister has a lifesaving tool in her car that is designed to cut through a seat belt if she gets trapped. She keeps it in the trunk."

No reference was made to hair color, so I leave that to you.

Why do people, real people, do such dumb things? Fire extinguishers are usually kept in an unattached garage and why are smoke detectors usually disabled due to the smoke arising from regular cooking? Why do folks put emergency flashlights in a cabinet or pantry where it is darker than an ancient Egyptian night, buried under all sorts of things certain to be needed sometime? I admit to knowing why people put rubber tape over the Check Engine Light as the glare hurts your eyes while driving at night.

The list could continue, but I will move on to some sort of spiritual point in the hope that your day will be enriched.

Why do people have everything they could possibly ever need while they drive to work, things such as cell a phone to hold close to their head in case it rings, a bottle of water also firmly grasped in the same hand. In the other hand is held the steering wheel, often a lit cigarette, keys for the office and in more cases than you may think, the baby which hopefully will be remembered in time to drop off at the day care.

I will not mention the lack of safety, but I do wonder why people carry everything under the sun, but if the need for a Bible arises, they know they have one, but said Bible could not be found in time for use.

Over many years I have witnessed a remarkable growth in the size of the purses the ladies carry. Yes, some of the 'men' carry much smaller ones, but purses, large and small for reasons unknown do not have room for a Bible, even a small one for itty bitty Christians. At our church we have spare ushers on duty to help ladies lug in purses. The other Sunday a lady came in, with the help of the ushers, two of them, carrying her purse. She got the kids settled, put her purse on two seats and then rushed to the church office to borrow a Bible for the Sunday School class. I let her use one of mine as I knew it would be safe, as there was no room for it in the purse.

The point? Our lives will much more effective for Jesus if we take the time to clean out the accumulated unnecessary 'stuff' in our lives, thereby making room for the things that matter most. Do you have any inner closets or purses that need a good cleaning?
