I Asked God

I asked God to forgive me
From all my sins and shame
He took my transgressions to the cross
And gave to me a brand new name

I asked God “Am I worthy?”
To be a joint-heir with Jesus, Your Son
He said “There is none righteous,
No, not even one.”

Sometimes I forget I’m cleansed
The devil sneaks in unaware
I play over my sins like a movie
Then my mind fills up with despair

It seems to be a vicious cycle
This doubt that gnaws at my soul
Has God really forgotten my sins?
I wonder, as I struggle in this hole

I asked God to forgive me again
For my doubts and my troubled mind
To give me this peace I search for
He said “Only in Jesus, you’ll find.”

I asked God to strengthen me
To dissolve my worries and distress
He answered me with His presence
Said “Believe you have been blessed!

I have washed away your sins
I have chosen to remember them no more
I have cast them into the sea
They are there, on the ocean’s floor”

Then I praised God for His Son
Who shed His blood for me on that hill
By His grace I’m assured of forgiveness
When I remain inside His will
