Family Heirlooms

Family Heirlooms can be special gifts
When to you, they are released.
Especially when those heirlooms come
From loved ones now deceased.

Family treasures came to me that day
In a dusty old attic chest.
I could hardly wait to peer inside
I knew I would be blessed.

My Mama's things passed on by her
To me, her only daughter.
Precious memories drifted through my soul
Like wellsprings of water.

I came across some old photographs
While going through Mama's trunk.
Long ago pictures of her and Daddy
Who really was quite a hunk!

More family pictures from olden days
Worn with yellowed age.
Of ladies dressed in great big hats
Must've been the latest rage.

Little doilies that my Granny crocheted
Lay hidden among the pile.
Sunday school papers from long ago
Created by me, as a child.

Grandpa's old antique smoking pipe
Fragranced still a sweet savor.
Favorite recipes from Granny’s kitchen
Always promised a great flavor.

Mama had kept a wooden clothespin too.
Why? I did not know.
Cherished life possessions, placed inside
All special to her, I suppose.

I found some faded old love letters
From my Dad while away at war.
They spoke of his great love for her
How he missed her to the core.

Her wedding rings for more than 50 years
Placed back inside their box.
A pretty monogrammed handkerchief
Contained my baby locks.

My cherished family heirlooms discovered
In this old treasure chest.
But the thing that caught my eye at last
Was the Bible Mom possessed.

It's worn old cover was split and frayed
And barely held together.
It said Presented to: Sweet Josephine
The love of my life, forever.

From "Your loving, devoted husband"
Dated May 1st, 1949.
"Thank you for always being there for me
And letting your little light shine."

I carefully turned the tattered old pages
And there, I was humbled to see
Underlined scriptures and notes she wrote
In her Bible just for me!

"Lord," she wrote "Please save my daughter
She knows not that she's lost.
Open her eyes to see the true sacrifice
You made upon the cross."

With each page I turned to another verse
Highlighted and underlined.
I knew that God was speaking to my soul
My heart was entwined.

I bowed my head and gave my heart to Jesus
There, in that very moment.
All her life my Mama had prayed
I'd be released from my torment.

So never give up on your children, lost
It may take your death for them to see
How much they need the Father's love
To set their imprisoned souls free.

This poem was about fictional characters

Very lovely poem, Julia. You painted a picture of what could have been, in such a credible way that I wouldn't have known it was about fictional characters, had you not said. Thanks for your thoughts. May we all be blessed with such memories.

Dear Julia, even though the characters are fiction, this can happen in similar fashion to real people. I treasure my family heirlooms. You wrote this very beautifully. I visulized each item. Thank you for sharing, Jacque

This is lovely reading, expressing the love of mamas for their children so well.
