Larry Lilly's Letter Friday January 5, 2007
My how the times have changed over the last few hundred years. My statement from Alexis de Tocqueville on yesterday sparked a flood of response and I was also commended and castigated for the wise word from the considered unwise Mr. James Brown. Such is life.
The French wise man as you recall wrote:
"There is no country in the world where the tie of marriage is more respected than in America, or where conjugal happiness is more highly or worthily appreciated."
In those days children were not considered a part of 'marriage,' but by a majority were deemed as the primary reason for marriage. The people of that era believed the word and were busy obeying the command to 'fill up' the earth. The naivet of our predecessors.
In today's world the children, for the most part are decorations, objects through which we fulfill our own dreams, or in many cases, horrible or minor accidents. We keep the size of our family down so that we can have more, and feel smugly sorry for those undisciplined lustful pagans, even if they do carry a Bible, who insist on a large family, while we willfully forget that offspring are said to be the heritage of the Lord. We would rather have a new car than a whiny child!
Concerning our refusal to accept biblical, marital responsibility a fellow or I should say Sister writer commenting on yesterday's piece wrote:
"What a wake up call. We do need to be more responsible in this world. You know that song, "Be careful little ears what you hear The world IS watching us, they just might aspire to be like us, if we shed a little light."
Perhaps you fail to see the irony in the phrase, 'They just might aspire to be like us, if we shed a little light.' That the world is 'being like us' in the matter of family life is an interesting argument. Truth be known, the body of professing believers is statistically a mirror of the world. According to the numbers the failure rate concerning families is like the world. I am amazed to observe this.
Now, here I go again, spouting a verse that the scholars are sure to find a way to say, "Well, yes, I know it says that, but how can we be sure that is what it really means?" Here is the verse in question and one that is paramount on the scale of the ones we decide is okay to ignore.
1 Timothy 5:8, "But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel."
I am certain the inbox will overflow with more admonitions not to be so mean. Is it really mean to simply quote the clear teaching of scripture and adamantly insist that Christians with families assume their biblical responsibility and provide for their own children while they run around the town, the church and country pretending to spiritual?
Wouldn't you grasp from the above verse and full teaching of God's word, that 'infidels' are NOT spiritual people, but in reality the embodiment of the old song, "The Great Pretender."
That the early Christians won the respect of the world by their love for Jesus and His children by rescuing abandoned children is a matter of historical fact. Civilization reached its pinnacle due to the influence of Christendom. Shall we descend to the pit due to our lack of adherence to the truth taught about our familial responsibility?
